The Maelstrom Companion

The Maelstrom CompanionPublisher: Arion Games

The Maelstrom RPG, published in 1984 was a small but popular game, released partly on the success of the Fighting Fantasy books, also from Puffin.  Written by Alexander Scott, a teenager at the time, the game soon gathered a loyal following.  Despite being in print for only a short time, the game has developed something of a cult following, and the herbal section has inspired many net-based RPG herbals.

In 2007, Arion Games acquired the license to re-release the original book as a pdf, and since its re-release has been very popular.  However, the 24 years of game design since the original release have produced many new thoughts and theories, and Arion Games wanted to bring the game into the 21st century.  Thus the companion was born.  We wanted to plug a few gaps in the available livings, expand and clarify the combat system, especially gunpowder weapons, expand the magic system and provide some setting information.  And here it is!  We hope that this book will enhance your Maelstrom games and campaigns, and provide even more Tudor adventure.

Collection of Horrors: Body of Evidence

Collection of Horrors: Body of EvidencePublisher: White Wolf

Officer Hutchinson swept over the brutality with dispassion and diligence. With every picture he took, with every swab of the blood, he told himself he was a servant of justice. He was a part of the team that was going to put that asshole away for life. For the past three years, detective Chuck Chalmers mentored and inspired him to whatever minor greatness he’d achieved.

As he looked over the chalk outlines, he knew there was something he was missing. That’s why he’s the junior detective. He looked to his mentor. “Officer Chalmers, there’s something here I’m not seeing.”

The senior officer glances back from his cell phone. “If you think you’re missing something, it’s your mind telling you that you can’t accept the simplest answer.” He didn’t even stop hammering the keypad while he spoke. “Now get back to the picture-taking, Hutchinson.”

“Officer Chalmers, are you alright? You haven’t been yourself lately,” Hutchinson said, concerned. He didn’t even get an answer. Hutchinson shrugged and snapped a few more shots from another angle.

The Collection of Horrors is an anthology of Storyteller tools inspired by the Horror Recognition Guide that you can either use in conjunction with the Guide or as part of your existing Hunter: The Vigil chronicle.

Each story kit in the Collection of Horrors (which you can buy individually, as a bundle or as a subscription) contains variety of appropriate tools; usually an SAS scene, a character with a character sheet, and props ranging from maps and reports to print out and hand to your players, to short imbedded audio files that you can play at your gaming table. These kits represent a collection of evocative story tools that you can write a story around, drop into an existing SAS or even string together. They aren’t stories in their own right, but rather pieces that you can snap together into whatever shape you want. Using the Guide can add even more props and ideas to this anthology, but it’s not required to use the various story kits in the Collection of Horrors.

Please note: Due to the nature of the embedded audio file, it cannot be paused, rewound or fast-forwarded once started.

Big Iron Vault #1

Big Iron Vault #1Publisher: Big Iron Vault

A Killer First Issue!

Our first issue's cover is a wonderful watercolour painting by Rising Stars of Manga award winning artist Lanny Liu. It is called the Dragon and the Knight, both are taking a break from fighting to read BIV #1. As you should too!

In this issue ...

A complete new game by Keith Foo entitled Mysterious Circumstances. It is a new style of "Beer and Pretzels" RPG that is meant to take only three hours to complete. Simple, yet entertaining it will no doubt provide hours of "down time" fun while taking a break from your usual campaign.

We were blessed to have Shelly Mazzanoble be part of our first issue. Renowned as the author of Confessions of a Part-time Sorceress she has been instrumental in encouraging the explosion of women gamers we see today.

In addition, we have ongoing columnists working on such topics as Living with a Gamer, Coming out of the gaming closet, The best store in the GTA and Keith Hackwood's deep dive into the gamer's psyche with Through the Mountains of Qaf and plenty more campaign material that can help you flush out your world. Our tough but fair reviewer of old school games checks out Castles & Crusades in the column Kickin' It Old School.

To add even more value, www.thehobbykingdom.com has generously provided a $10 CDN gift card in the magazine as part of their ad. Bring a copy of Big Iron Vault #1 to their retail store, show them that you support independant publishers to receive your bonus. (Due to logistics you need to be there in person, printing of the advertisement is allowed and one card per family while the offer lasts.)

So why not get an issue today? With all this value it's really a no brainer!
