How to Spice Up Combat

Combat is an integral part of most role-playing games, and in many of them the most IMPORTANT part.  Lots of RPGs have game systems almost entirely devoted to rules used for adjudicating fights; whether between individuals, vehicles, or massed armies.  Many of these conflict resolution mechanics are complicated, and can take a long time to resolve at the table.  This can lead to lots of downtime, as well as boredom and frustration, for players who aren't immediately involved in the action.

 

But even in games where combat is a relatively short and/or simple affair, it might still be a terribly dry one.  A bunch of players sitting around a table calling out numbers, die roll results, and damage values-RPG as Bingo game-with no context, flair, or narrative excitement to frame the action; can kill a game faster than a bullet to the head.  

 

While there are certainly players who are fine with this style of game ("Roll your attack."  "I rolled a 16.”  “You hit, roll for damage.”  “An 8.”  “He's wounded, but still standing.  He attacks you.  Roll your defense.”); many more would rather have combat be more interesting and dynamic.  After all, fights (whether in the real world, or a fictional one) should function to get the heart pumping and the adrenaline going, and should be ABOUT SOMETHING other than killing the next roomful of nameless orcs.  

 

With all of that in mind, this Avalon Games How To Book is intended to give gamers a variety of tools, suggestions and examples (many of them illustrated by popular fiction) in order to make their combats more enjoyable and more meaningful; hopefully leading to a better playing experience and more fun for everyone at the table.

Sehvain Malual is renowned for his work in necromancy, using the dark art to destroy the undead pestilence polluting the world. However every warrior must hang his proverbial sword and retiring from adventuring life, the wizened elf settled down in a nearby town purchasing a small townhouse. Here, he would finally find the peace he so craved, or such he hoped before he found The Black Lexicon. What dark intent consumes Sehvain’s time is anyone’s guess, but only the PC can uncover the Legacy of Darkness.

This product is an installable module for use with the Fantasy Ground II virtual tabletop. The adventure module has been carefully organized to streamline gameplay and includes, story elements, personalities, items, vehicles (if necessary) and images. These can be modified within your Fantasy Grounds campaign as needed.

The Covenant’s “Combat Ubasti” genetic engineering program began during the late 2050s, at the University of California Berkley. The programs’ first successes created several varieties of drug and bomb sniffing lynx, before Bastian geneticists were able to crack the true Ubasti genome in 2072. The Ubasti were even more successful an engineered species than their designers intended. The Covenant quickly realized the Ubasti were fully sentient and capable of learning at a rate comparable to a human.

Not wanting to repeat the sins of an earlier Covenant, the Ubasti were quickly freed. But when given their freedom, not one single Ubasti left its unit. The great cats’ courage earned the respect, love and trust of the Covenant’s humans, and in turn the Ubasti chose to become part of the dominant homo sapiens ‘pack’. Today, the Ubasti serve the Covenant as ferocious war-beasts, pampered and beloved.

The Ubasti are probably the most unique of the many species that call Otherverse America home: genetically engineered lions bred to hunt Lifer terrorists. This micro-sourcebook delves a little deeper into the species’ origins and culture and details exotic new Ubasti breeds.

The Castle of the Hand is a set of basic maps for use any any fantasy role playing game.

The maps are without adornment, GMs can add their own final touches to them as they see fit. They are also hand drawn and deliberately left rough in some areas. I could have gone over them with a graphics tool but I personally like the hand drawn look&feel.

The maps are designed with a square grid for use in the virtual desktop tool MapTool (http://rptools.net/). Maptool is a free package and I encourage you to use it. It is however not required to use these maps as play aids.

The Tower of the Hand is called thus due to its Five Towers, that stand out like fingers from and outstretched hand emerging from the ground. Legend has it that the towers were the home of the Five Wives of the Lord of the Hand. Each was imprisoned in their own tower, and the Lord would visit them as he chose.

Map Description

"Luftschiff Majestic", an "average" modern airship


Named Luftschiff Majestic, this new rigid airship is truly a hotel in the sky. Like her namesake, the ocean liner RMS Majestic, Luftschiff Majestic carries her passengers across the sea in luxury. Unlike ocean liners, the Luftschiff Majestic offers passengers breathtaking views from an astounding one thousand feet above sea level.

This new airship actually consists of a large rigid frame filled with a safe, lighter than air gas, known as hydrogen, a control gondola and a multi-tiered structure housing passengers and crew alike. Wedged in between the control gondola and the passenger area is a spacious cargo area. Likewise, another large cargo area has been placed between the rear engines and the passenger area.

Passengers and crew enter the craft via a gangplank on the ground that leads to an entry on the bottom level of the craft. Housed on this lower level are the crew quarters. Quarters are divided up with officers housed in between a set of crew quarters. Officers are given the luxury of single beds while the twelve crew members are housed in bunk beds. Spacious showers and bathrooms are also afforded the crew of this magnificent craft.

The second level will not disappoint. Officer and crew messes are located on this level as well as the main kitchen for the ship. However, the bulk of this level is designated for passengers with a sealed smoking cabin, bar, lavatory facilities for both sexes as well as showers for passengers. Both the smoking cabin and bar are lavishly appointed with dark leather furniture and rick mahogany trim.

However , where the Luftschiff Majestic really shines is on the third level. The top level of the passenger area houses forty, double occupancy, passenger births, a dining room, reading area and two grand promenades flanking either side of the ship. Here passengers can take their meals, listen to a jazz pianist or simply relax in the lounge area. Although each cabin is small by hotel standards, they are all richly appointed and sure to satisfy the most demanding tastes.
