Adventure Module for Fantasy Grounds II

Building on the story arc started in the Core Rules adventure, Public Transit Assassins, Two-Bit Thugs allows the characters to keep exploring Wellstone City, adding a slug of new NPCs and two new locations. The party has opportunity thrust upon them when a mistress of the high circles of Wellstone City gets caught in a gang war crossfire in the neutral borough of Wellstone Park. No matter what their standing at the end of PTA, they have another opportunity to gain favor among the crime lords of Wellstone.

The second adventure in the Wellstone City Chronicles series, Two-Bit Thugs can be run as a continuation of Public Transit Assassins or a completely separate adventure. It can be used as a campaign spring board, a diversion, or a one-shot adventure; and of course, it leads nicely into future exploits in Wellstone City.

Welcome to the first in a series entitled "I Want My Magic Back!" by Sigfried Trent. This series aims to encapsulate the old-school eclectic and wondrous feel of pre-4E magic in a 4E class.

One of the more dramatic changes made by 4E was the abandonment of the so called "Vancian" magic system. It was so named in honor of the fantasy author Jack Vance who inspired D&D spell memorization with his Dying Earth series. Instead of memorizing a series of single use spells from a large pool of possibilities, 4E wizards have a relatively fixed set of spells drawn from a far more limited pool. The range of what spells could do also shrank dramatically from near infinite possibility, to a more limited list of damage values and status effects focused mainly on combat with more utility-based effects shifted off into rituals.

The aim in this series is to recapture that old-school magic feeling, but in a way that is mechanically compatible with 4E. Maintaining game balance is important, but we will be stretching the boundaries from time to time in order to give our new spellcaster flexibility in their repertoire and capture some of that wondrous and eclectic magic feeling of yesteryear.

In this first product we will establish the basic rules for acquiring and casting Vancian spells by detailing a new class: the Vancian Mage, complete with schools of specialization and counterspelling. Finally we will offer a taste of what is to come with a small handful of iconic spells.

As an impressionable teenager I always loved the glossy hardback sci-fi books that seemed to abound in those days, telling of 'future histories' and featuring page after page of gorgeous airbrushed art work. Distant Vistas is a game resource in that style: science fiction told as fact, with plenty of illustrations thrown in the mix. The Sector described is far too large to describe in full - rather, Distant Vistas gives a flavour of it, with selected planets, cities, alien species, weapons and spacecraft described in detail... not to mention sports, culture, politics, religion and useful gadgets! I very much hope that Distant Vistas will be of use to sci-fi RPG GMs - that maybe the Player Characters in your next game will get to fire the I-47's plasma cannons in anger, or will sit down with a Kree for a game of Karanj (they should do well: very wise, the Kree, but terrible bluffers...).
