Forum/EMail Game - Combat Guidelines
Combat Guidelines
(Please note that these have been written with the old World of Darkness system in mind, it is easily adapted to other game systems.)
Welcome to the World of Darkness, here, combat is a common thing, and death is something we must all face. In order to streamline combat and make it fun for all, I've written up these guidelines.
I. ORDER
Combat is divided into several parts.
1. Initiative Rolls
2. Declaration of Expenditure
3. Action Declaration
4. Actions
5. Posting
I'll explain clearly what happens in each part.
1. INITIATIVE ROLLS
As per 2ed, each player must roll Wits+Alertness vs. Difficulty of 4. The more successes, the better. I will handle this. I will send a message with the subject: Turn <#>: Initiative. It will tell you the order in which the participants in the fight will be acting.
2. DECLARATION OF EXPENDITURE
This is where each player declares their expenditure of certain traits. Vampires would declare the use of blood to heal, pump up stats, or for celerity and other powers. Garou could spend rage, Mages quintessence, etc... These posts must have the subject: <> Turn <#>: Point Expenditure
3. ACTION DECLARATION
This differs from tabletop, in that you don't have to declare in a certain order. Instead, all the players involved must declare their actions privately to me. Actions should be brief, something like 'My character will try to hit the other guy.' followed by the stats that should be rolled, 'Roll Dexterity+Brawl vs. 6'. Don't tell me what numbers to roll, just the stats, I'll check your character sheets.
4. ACTIONS
I'll do the rolls, and decide what the results of the actions are. For example, if Bob managed to hit Harry in the face. I'll then decide what the damage was, and mail both Bob and Harry with the results.
5. POSTING
Once, you know what the results of your actions for the turn were, you can post. For example, if you received a message that said that you managed to hit your target and bruise him, you would write a post with the subject: <> Turn <#>:
This post should adhere to normal posting guidelines, be written in third person past tense with the correct headers and should describe what it is your actions were and their effects. This is the most important part of combat. Everything else is just mechanics, this is the part where fun comes in.
Once these five phases are complete, we start the process over for the next turn, until the fight is over.
