RE: Open Story - Pouredale
Chapter 3
After having a beer with Marcus, during which time Marcus spent the whole time commenting on the physical and mental attributes of every female in the room Alain made his excuses and left.
'Yeah, I better get back too, gotta do this essay on bloody ecology.'
They walked back to halls together and parted ways at Marcus' door. It was both a blessing and a curse thought Alain that Marcus' room was directly opposite his. A blessing because it could have been next door, a curse because it meant Alain was always first on the list whenever Marcus had an urge to 'get wasted' or 'get laid' or 'go on the pull' or 'see how many shots you can down in one minute'.
Alain donned his ceremonial robes, they were a dark drab brown which went with his hair but not his eyes, which were blue although you would never know as they were almost always hidden by his hair which hung down to just below his shoulders. The robes hung loosely from his frame which was not unusual as he was of a slight build, though not quite lanky.
Alain knelt before his altar which was a small wooden table with a large white crystal in the centre although Alain could not remember what type of crystal it was. Beside this was a small brass incense burner currently burning one of his homemade "meditation aids", and a rat's skull.
Alain concentrated on the Crystal, closing off all outside sensation and building a sphere of blue energy around himself and the altar. He then summoned to himself a shaft of blinding white light which he focused with his mind and directed into the Crystal. After a few minutes of charging the Crystal he grasped the Crystal between both hands and started to recite the words of power he had learnt from studying Grimoire magical texts. He imagined the words changing the shape and form of the light being emitted by the Crystal.
Once he had finished reciting the spell he dissipated the last of the stored energy in the Crystal and gradually opened his eyes and stood up. 'Another failure', he thought to himself as he took off his robes, 'why didn't it work?'. As he mulled the problem over in his mind he tied up the laces on his trainers, sat down at his computer and pressed the power button; nothing happened. 'Oh, great, not again!' It had cost Alain a weeks food allowance to get one of the guys studying IT to fix his computer last time it had broken. Reaching below the desk he tried to feel if the wall socket was turned on, couldn't reach.
Alain rose from his chair and by the light of the candle on the altar avoided the mess on the floor and flipped te light switch. The light bulb remained resolutely off. 'For fucks sake.' Alain muttered, not a bloody fuse. I'll have to ring the bloody security guy and get him to check it.' Pulling his mobile phone from the left jeans pocket in which it almost permanently resided he scrolled to the campus security contact and hit dial. 'Do,de,do...do,de,do...do,de,do' In disgust Alain looked at the phone, no signal!
